Can I enter Japan from China? Update on COVID-19 restrictions.

I was hoping I wouldn't have to write about COVID-19 travel restrictions ever again on this blog, but a new update has just come in that I think is important too important not to share. Keep reading to find out about current Japan entry restrictions and how to enter Japan as of December 30, 2022.

Current measures for travellers/returnees from China


Beginning December 30th 2022, the Japanese government has put the following measures in place.


  • All entrants to Japan who have stayed in China in the last 7 days, or taken a direct flight from China (with the exception of Hong Kong and Macau) will be required to take a test on arrival into Japan.

  • Airlines have been asked to limit the number of direct flights arriving from China into Japan (with the exception of Hong Kong and Macau), and have been requested not to increase the number of flights currently in operation.

  • Flights from China must arrive into one of the following airports: Narita International Airport, Haneda Airport, Kansai International Airport, and Chubu Centrair International Airport.

  • All entrants are required to show a valid COVID-19 vaccination certificate (3 doses of an approved vaccine) OR a certificate of a negative test result taken within 72 hours of departure from the original country of origin. (Unchanged from October 11, 2022)

  • All entrants must register on Visit Japan Web.

  • From January 8, all entrants from China to Japan via direct flight (except departing Hong Kong and Macau) must submit certificate of a negative test result taken within 72 hours of departure (UPDATE).

Current measures for all other travellers/returnees


The following measures are currently in place for entrants arriving from all other countries.


  • From October 11, 2022 all travellers and returnees are required to show a valid COVID-19 vaccination certificate (3 doses of an approved vaccine) OR a certificate of a negative test result taken within 72 hours of departure from the original country of origin.

  • Any person entering Japan with COVID-19 symptoms will be tested on arrival in Japan. People with a positive test result will be required to quarantine at a designated quarantine facility.

  • All entrants must register on Visit Japan Web.

I'm with you - I am ready to never think about COVID again, but I definitely think it makes sense that restrictions have to go back into effect given how rampant COVID-19 has been in China.

Just when we think things are "safe" again, the rules keep changing. Thank you for the helpful updates! I really hope to visit Japan this year!

It definitely is! We've already seen LOTS of tourist in the past few months, and it's only gonna increase as travel gets back to normal.
