Do a wine tasting at the award winning Cullen Wines
Considered to be one of the first wineries in the region, Cullen Wines is one of the premier wineries in the Margaret River region, known for its commitment to biodynamic farming and sustainable practices since 1971. The winery produces some of the finest wines in the south west, with a focus on quality and environmental stewardship. Best of all, the winery uses no additives in their products.
A visit to Cullen Wines offers a chance to taste their award-winning selections, including their renowned Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, in a serene and picturesque setting. It's possible to do a regular stand-up tasting at Cullen Wines, however, on this occasion we opted for an Intimate Seated Tasting Experience. The experience lasted a little under an hour, and gave us the chance to chat to the staff about the winery in more depth. We were able to ask as many questions as we liked without feeling rushed.
One interesting fact is that Cullen Wines is committed to the ancient practice of harvesting their grapes according to the cycle of the moon. It's something that they've been doing for years, and is a practice that is slowly being picked up by other wineries. The wine makers believe that harvesting this way can give their wine the optimal flavour profile.
The winery’s restaurant is also highly regarded, offering a farm-to-table dining experience that perfectly complements the wines. The menu features fresh, seasonal produce, some of which is grown on the estate. The dishes we enjoyed in August were all extremely well thought-through, well-presented, and absolutely delicious.
It's suggested to call ahead to make a booking, specially if you plan to enjoy lunch, or the intimate wine tasting experience.

Enjoy lunch with a view at the famous Leeuwin Wines
Established in 1973, Leeuwin Wines is another standout in the Margaret River region. Famous for its Art Series wines and its stunning view from the restaurant, it's another one not to be missed. The winery is known for producing some of the best Chardonnay in the world, along with a range of other premium wines. Visitors to Leeuwin can enjoy a guided tasting experience, where knowledgeable staff can answer questions about the wines and winemaking process. Those with a reservation at Leeuwin Restaurant can enjoy the wine tasting for free before or after their meal.
On this rainy August day we enjoyed the three course seasonal menu for lunch, paired with wine to accompany each dish, at the Leeuwin Restaurant. The restaurant uses fresh seasonal produce from the Margaret River region, showcasing some amazing local produce. We thoroughly enjoyed each dish that came out.
In addition to its exceptional wines, Leeuwin Wines is also renowned for its art and music events, including the annual Leeuwin Concert Series, which attracts world-class performers. Past performers include KD Lang, Sting, Tom Jones, and John Farnham (just to name a few!)
The estate’s gallery which sits beneath the restaurant showcases an impressive collection of contemporary Australian art, some of which is featured on their wine labels.

Final thoughts on our trip to Margaret River
Despite rain each and every day on this trip, we thoroughly enjoyed our experience in this gorgeous part of Western Australia. We'd both heard a lot about Margaret River in the past, from friends and family who had visited, and were worried it may not meet our high expectations, but it really went above and beyond. The wine was exceptional, the food was outstanding, and the area was lunch and green and filled with fresh air.
It's time to put Margaret River on your bucket list!
